Clermont County

Roofing in Batavia

The Clermont County seat, platted in 1814, with a historic core and newer development around it.

The housing stock

Ezekiel Dimmitt became the area's first settler in the autumn of 1797. George Ely purchased the Minnis survey in 1807 and platted the town on 24 October 1814, possibly naming it after Batavia, New York. It incorporated as a village on 10 February 1842.

A historic county-seat core with nineteenth-century building, surrounded by later residential development.

What we look at on a roof in Batavia

  • Nineteenth-century buildings in the core, with the cornice, chimney and flashing detail that goes with them.
  • Conventional suburban asphalt roofs in the newer development around it.
  • Two different jobs depending which side of town the address is on.

What the storm record actually shows

Within five miles of the center of 45103, NOAA recorded 1 hail event and 6 damaging-wind events between 2021 and 19 May 2026. The largest hail on record is 0.88″ on 19 April 2025. The strongest recorded gust is 50 kt (58 mph).

That ratio is the point. Wind outnumbers hail here by a wide margin, which is why the starter course, the drip edge and the nailing pattern do more for a roof in Batavia than the impact rating printed on the shingle wrapper. Wind damage also does not look like damage from the ground: a creased or unsealed shingle sits flat and looks fine until the next storm takes it.

Storm Check lists every one of these events with dates, sizes and distances for ZIP 45103.
