How to read a result

Distance
Measured from the geographic center of the ZIP code to the point where the event was reported. A ZIP code covers several miles, so an event two miles from the center could be next door or could be across town.
Hail size
The largest stone observed at that point, in inches. One inch is roughly the threshold at which hail starts to bruise an asphalt shingle mat.
Wind speed
Recorded in knots, as NOAA publishes it, with the mph conversion shown alongside. Most are estimated gusts inferred from damage rather than instrument readings.
Twelve-month window
Whether the event is still inside the twelve months most Ohio and Kentucky policies allow for reporting a loss. Your own policy wording is what controls that.

A quiet ZIP code is useful information, not a dead end. If nothing significant has been recorded near you, a roof problem is more likely to be age, workmanship or a detail that was never right — and those are found by looking at the roof, not by looking at the weather.

What this data is, exactly

  • Each record is a report at a point: a trained spotter, an official observer, a broadcast source or a member of the public reporting hail of a given size or wind causing damage.
  • Only events with recorded coordinates are included, because assigning an event without coordinates to a county centroid would produce a confident-looking distance that means nothing.
  • Event types are limited to Hail and Thunderstorm Wind across Boone County, KY, Campbell County, KY, Kenton County, KY, Butler County, OH, Clermont County, OH, Hamilton County, OH, Warren County, OH.
  • Absence of a report is not evidence that no storm occurred. It means no one reported one at that point.

Why does my ZIP code show so few hail events?

Because hail is genuinely uncommon here compared with damaging wind. Across the seven counties from 2021 onward NOAA recorded far more wind events than hail events, and hail falls in narrow swaths, so neighbouring ZIP codes can differ sharply.

Where does the distance come from?

From the geographic center of the ZIP code tabulation area published by the US Census Bureau, to the coordinates on the NOAA report, calculated as a great-circle distance.

How current is it?
