Wind damage against ordinary wear: the distinction this market runs on

If you only read one article on this site, read this one. Wind is the peril that damages roofs in Greater Cincinnati, it damages them in a way that is almost invisible from the ground, and the difference between wind damage and wear is the difference between an event and an expiry.

What wind actually does

Wind does not push a roof down. It lifts it. Air moving over the roof plane creates negative pressure above the surface, and that suction is strongest at the perimeter — the eaves, the rakes and the ridge — and at any change of plane. A shingle only resists it in three ways: the nails holding it, the sealant strip bonding it to the course below, and the course above holding its head down.

So wind damage happens in a sequence. First the sealant bond breaks and the tab starts to move in a gust. Then the shingle folds back and creases across its width, which permanently damages the mat even if it lies back down afterwards. Then, in a later storm, it tears off. Somebody looking at the roof between the first and third stages sees a roof that looks perfectly normal and is not.

The crease is the diagnostic. A shingle that has been folded back and released holds a line across its width, visible in raking light and permanent. Wear does not produce a straight line across a course; nothing but a fold does.

Why the edges lose first

Uplift is highest at the perimeter of the roof, which is why the details there carry the whole thing:

Starter course
A purpose-made starter strip puts an adhesive bead right at the eave and the rake, bonding the first course down. Cut-up shingles used as starter put the adhesive in the wrong place, so the first course is effectively unbonded from day one. See starter strip.
Drip edge
Metal at the eave and rake that stiffens the edge, supports the overhang and stops wind getting under the first course. A roof with no drip edge has a soft, liftable edge all the way round. See drip edge.
Nailing pattern
Nails must land in the manufacturer nail line, at the specified count, driven flush and not through the surface. High nails miss the underlying course entirely, which means each shingle is held by half of what it should be.
Fastener pull-through
A nail is only as good as what it is in. In older decking, thin board sheathing, or damp OSB, the head pulls through the shingle or the nail withdraws from the deck. This is the failure nobody sees, and it is why deck condition is part of a wind conversation.

This is why the honest local framing on this site is edge detailing over impact ratings. In a metro that recorded 304 damaging-wind events in six years, the starter course and the drip edge do more for a roof than the wrapper the shingles came in.

How much wind it takes

Less than people expect, and it depends far more on the roof than on the gust. A well-nailed, properly started roof with intact seals shrugs off a strong thunderstorm. An older roof whose seals have already released can lose courses in a gust that does nothing to the house next door. Both roofs experienced the same weather; only one had anything left holding it down.

This is also why a roof can be damaged by a storm that was not remarkable. A NOAA damaging-wind report is filed at a threshold, and plenty of roof damage happens below it. What to do after a wind event

  1. Walk the property from the ground. Shingle pieces in the yard, ridge cap on the lawn, a lifted corner on a rake, gutter pulled loose at one end.
  2. Photograph what you find, with the date. Photographs taken now are worth more than a recollection later.
  3. Look at the neighbors’ roofs. Damage down one side of a street is the signature of a squall line and it supports the account of what happened.
  4. Check the date against the record. Recorded storm dates lists the significant wind days by county.
  5. Get it looked at close up. The seal check is the part that cannot be done from the ground, and it is the part that determines whether there is damage at all.

Do not let anyone lift shingles on your roof to demonstrate damage to you. Lifting a sealed shingle breaks the seal. A demonstration can create exactly the condition it claims to find, and it is not always accidental.

Where this leaves you

Wind damage is an event, with a date, and it is treated as a sudden accidental loss. Wear is the roof reaching the end of its service life, and no policy covers a roof for getting old. Most disputed roof claims in this market live exactly on that line, and the way to be on the right side of it is documentation taken promptly, with dates that match the record and photographs that show specific slopes — not a stronger opinion later. My shingles are all still there. Can there still be wind damage?

Yes, and this is the most common version of it here. Shingles that were lifted and folded back are creased and unsealed even though they are still on the roof. They will come off in a later storm, and the damage dates from the earlier one.

How can anyone prove which storm did it?

Nobody proves it absolutely. What supports it is a date that corresponds to a recorded event near the address, damage in a direction consistent with that event, and documentation taken close to the date rather than a year later.

The roof is 20 years old and the wind took some shingles. Is that wind damage or wear?

It can genuinely be both, and that is what makes these claims difficult. An old roof holds less well, and an old roof also has less remaining value. The technical question is whether the specific damage was caused by the event; the settlement question is what the roof was worth before it — see ACV vs RCV.

Does a higher wind rating on the shingle solve this?

Only partly. A wind rating is achieved under test conditions with correct installation, correct starter, correct nailing and a fully sealed roof. On a real roof the rating is a ceiling that only good detailing lets you reach, which is why the installation matters more than the number.
