Roofing in Hyde Park
One of the oldest and most architecturally varied roofs-per-street collections in the city, and one of the few places in the metro where a roofer still needs to know what a box gutter is.
The housing stock
The village of Hyde Park was incorporated in 1896 and annexed by Cincinnati soon after, and the neighborhood experienced a real-estate and population boom almost immediately. The name was suggested by a Cincinnati architect, which tells you something about who was building here.
The result is a dense band of turn-of-the-century and early twentieth-century housing: masonry and frame, steep pitches, deep eaves, dormers, and a great deal of cornice detail. Later infill and post-war building sit alongside it.
Built-in box gutters are common on the pre-1940 stock here. They are part of the cornice rather than hung off it, so a failed lining drains into the framing and the wall instead of over the edge. That ratio is the point. Wind outnumbers hail here by a wide margin, which is why the starter course, the drip edge and the nailing pattern do more for a roof in Hyde Park than the impact rating printed on the shingle wrapper. Wind damage also does not look like damage from the ground: a creased or unsealed shingle sits flat and looks fine until the next storm takes it.
