Roofing in Wyoming
A nineteenth-century railroad suburb with a National Register historic district and a housing stock that is unusually wooden for southwestern Ohio.
The housing stock
Wyoming became a village in 1874 and a city in 1951. Its Village Historic District was established in 1986 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Proximity to the lumber mills along the Miami and Erie Canal, plus the New England origins of many early settlers, gave the district a weatherboard character that is distinct in a region where brick is the norm.
Victorian frame housing predominates in the Village Historic District, with "The Village" and "Wyoming Hills" recognized as architecturally and topographically distinct areas. Mature trees are a civic priority and the city gives annual awards for maintaining them.
Built-in box gutters are common on the pre-1940 stock here. They are part of the cornice rather than hung off it, so a failed lining drains into the framing and the wall instead of over the edge. That ratio is the point.
