Hamilton County

Roofing in Montgomery

One of the oldest settlements in Hamilton County with a preserved historic core, wrapped in later residential building.

The housing stock

Settled in 1795, Montgomery is among the oldest settlements in the county. Settlers from Montgomery, New York arrived around 1806 and 1807 and named the village for their former home. It incorporated as a village in 1910 and reincorporated as a city in 1971.

A preserved historic core of early buildings, surrounded by substantially newer residential development.

What we look at on a roof in Montgomery

  • Two quite different jobs in one municipality: historic buildings in the core, conventional asphalt roofs around it.
  • On the older stock, wall and chimney flashing and original gutter detail.
  • On the newer stock, pipe boots reaching the end of their service life and valleys carrying a lot of water.

What the storm record actually shows

Within five miles of the center of 45242, NOAA recorded 1 hail event and 11 damaging-wind events between 2021 and 19 May 2026. The largest hail on record is 1″ on 5 July 2022. The strongest recorded gust is 60 kt (69 mph).

That ratio is the point. Wind outnumbers hail here by a wide margin, which is why the starter course, the drip edge and the nailing pattern do more for a roof in Montgomery than the impact rating printed on the shingle wrapper. Wind damage also does not look like damage from the ground: a creased or unsealed shingle sits flat and looks fine until the next storm takes it.

Storm Check lists every one of these events with dates, sizes and distances for ZIP 45242.
